The starter consists of two separate, interdependent motors. The solenoid is the first motor that comes into action when the starter is cranked. The solenoid also turns the starter on and off. If the latter is broken, the entire starter is no longer functional.
What is the starter solenoid?
The starter solenoid is an electric motor, it is an essential part which allows the starter to start. It is the first electrical connection which will cause the vehicle to start thanks to its electromagnetic system, it subsequently creates a mechanical force which will be transmitted to the starter. It is a cylindrical shaped part attached above the starter, but much smaller. However, it is an integral part of the starter, because it interacts with it. It is always connected with the starter, however, it is necessary to distinguish between solenoid and starter failures.
How does the starter solenoid work?
The solenoid is an electromagnetic part, it is an electromagnetic motor. It is thus made up of a system of copper coil and magnets. Once electricity coming from the battery passes through it, it starts up and fulfills its two functions. The solenoid has two distinct roles, mechanical and electrical. It has above all an electrical role, because it generally supplies the starter with electricity. It then has a mechanical function, because it will cause, thanks to the activation of its motor, the launch of the starter pinion. If your solenoid is broken, the vehicle will not start. For your solenoid failures,we have various certified brand spare parts.
The types of starter solenoid available on our site
The replacement solenoids that we offer on our site are diverse and are available for several types of vehicles (cars, trucks, heavy goods vehicles, etc.). The brands we offer are Valeo, Bosch, Iskra, Letrika, Denso. These are specially selected brands which meet a set of technical criteria and respect all manufacturing standards. You have the guarantee of durable and good quality parts, the products are certified and guaranteed over the long term. To find the type of solenoid you need, customer service is available, you can contact them by telephone or email. Before looking for your solenoid, however, you must know the reference as well as the brand suitable for the starter.
How to detect a solenoid failure?
The solenoid may fail after a while. It can break down due to repeated use, but also due to various external attacks. External causes can be, for example, dust which has infiltrated the system or grease, or carbon from the coal which has accumulated on the walls. It may also be a matter of oxidation of the contact points. The fault can be diagnosed by the sound of the solenoid, if when starting you do not hear a click, the part is faulty or poorly powered. It is also possible to test it using a Fluke tester, position it on the appropriate terminal if the tester does not light up your solenoid is faulty. You can also test it with a voltmeter. There is a simple technique that allows you to unclog this element if it no longer starts. With a strong enough blow on the part you will release the dust which is blocking its ignition. If the starter still does not turn on, you should seek professional advice. The part is indeed quite complex in its assembly, if the parts are not correctly placed, your solenoid will not work.
