                Fuse box

                Fuse box

                Fuse box

A fuse, also called a fuse circuit breaker, is a safety device which ensures the protection of the electrical and electronic installations of your vehicle. However, fuses are not just for vehicles. In fact, homes that have electrical panels also have fuses to protect the installations in the passenger compartment. There are different types of fuses on the market but since there are multiple fuses whether in your home or in your vehicle, it is better to be prepared and have a box in advance for replacement if necessary. Discover in this article all the essential information on fuses and fuse boxes.

                What is a fuse?

Fuses are safety devices that are found either in the electrical panels of your home or among the electrical installations of your vehicle. The role of fuses is to interrupt electrical current in the event of overcurrent causing overheating.

The fuses therefore open the electrical circuit when it detects a level of intensity dangerous for your vehicle or your home. Its mode of operation is simple: when the fuse detects a high level of heat which could prove to be dangerous, it melts and interrupts all current flow. The fuse thus reduces the intensity which has exceeded the limit to zero.

A fuse is therefore called a “safety device” because it prevents any risk of accident such as a fire or explosion.

Furthermore, fuses are not resettable, which differentiates them from circuit breakers. In other words, when a fuse is blown, it requires replacement since it becomes unusable. You can come across different types of fuse in the market. The three main types are: mini-fuses, standard fuses and maxi-fuses. Note that the manufacturing base of fuses is not the same and also exists in different types: glass, ceramic or even plastic. And each fuse, although they perform the same role, acts in different ways when faced with high circuit temperature. Others act quickly, very quickly, slowly or very slowly and there is what is called timed or non-timed.

                Fuse box

A fuse box, as its name suggests, is a box containing different types of fuses. Be aware that your home or vehicle is probably equipped with several fuses at the same time. Not being resettable, you must replace them as soon as one is burnt out. It is therefore necessary to have a spare fuse at your disposal for replacement, especially if you are traveling far away or traveling. So what you need is a fuse box.

A fuse box contains different types of fuses ready to be used as you wish. There are box models that even offer more than 450 fuses. The contents of a fuse box are therefore very diverse. You can already find assortments of fuses in different colors. You can also find different ratings ranging from 2 to 30 Amps. The choice is therefore very wide since it can contain mini fuses as well as maxi fuses, time-delayed fuses as well as non-delayed fuses and glass fuses as well as ceramic fuses.

                How to test your fuse?

To be able to replace your blown fuse and use a component in your box, you must already know if the fuse is indeed blown. To do this, you will need to do a short test on your fuses using a multimeter.

For the test, you must start by removing your fuse from its location. You must therefore determine well before that where your fuse box is located to have access to your fuse. You can always use your service book to help you if you have difficulty locating the fuse or box in question. Once you have located it and removed your fuse, being careful not to damage the other fuses, check its condition from the outside. Generally, a fuse in a transparent envelope which allows you to determine its state whether it is blown or not. So you can notice just by looking if the conductive tab has melted or not. If it is melted, your fuse is broken and needs to be replaced.

Moreover, some fuses do not give you this visibility which can help you check its condition at a glance. Hence the need to use a multimeter. Set your device to the ohmmeter position and connect the red and black wire to see the result or number displayed on the screen. Take note. Then take the fuse you want to check and connect the tips of your device to both ends of your fuse. The displayed value should be the same as the value you just noted at the beginning. Otherwise or if you see “overlimit” displayed, your fuse is blown.
