Marine Boat Alternator
An alternator operating in a marine environment involves some more specific conditions compared to a vehicle alternator.
What is a marine boat alternator?
An alternator is a rotating device that produces alternating current. The marine boat alternator is driven by a thermal propulsion or generator engine. This type of alternator has a high starting rotation speed or in the form driven by the line of shafts.
Whether it is an automobile alternator or a marine alternator, it must always be connected to a battery when it is delivering in order to obtain a direct voltage. Note that a marine alternator is a very normal alternator. The only difference between the other alternators lies in the fact that the device has been tropicalized by coating with a varnish. The bearings are thus lubricated for life. However, a simple auto alternator can do the trick in the absence of a marine alternator.
The characteristics of a marine boat alternator
Adapting alternators to a marine environment raises additional constraints, in this case:
- A slower rotation speed, so a marine alternator turns slower . The magnitude of the voltage is proportional to the speed of rotation. Maximum power is reached at 3500 rpm.
- A choice of power, as there are many batteries to recharge. The power of a marine alternator must be between 1/3 and ¼ of the capacity of the battery bank to be recharged.
- Regulation requires charging in three cycles in order to recharge the utility batteries. If you are using a vehicle alternator, the device will not be able to recharge the batteries to 100%. A marine alternator must be equipped with a controlled electronic regulator.
- Effective treatment against corrosion, such as anodized bearings, sealed and greased bearings, metal parts treated against corrosion, resin-insulated winding.
