The alternator is the engine component which supplies electricity to the electrical and electronic elements and recharges the vehicle's battery when the engine is running. However, the parts that make it up can wear out and cause a malfunction in the charging circuit and the battery will end up flat, losing all its charge. Carbon wear is one of the typical faults linked to alternators.

How do carbons work and when to check them?

The alternator consists of a copper coil wound around a magnet. A belt connected to the motor is used to turn this coil which will then produce electricity. The alternator is thus activated only when the engine is running. The role of the brushes is to pass an electric field towards the rotor (winding whose function is to create polarity).

The friction of the carbons against the collectors is the main source of breakdowns in the circuit. It is recommended to check the condition of the brushes approximately every 100,000 kilometers if the equipment has not broken down in the meantime. The wear of the carbons will thus lead to a charging problem or unstable production of electric current.
